Maclab Theatre and Citadel Theatre
May 28, 29, 31, and June 1
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITADEL THEATRE’S HEART & HUB PROGRAM
EMBARK ON THE EPIC JOURNEY WHERE THE RING CYCLE BEGINS
Wotan as Maestro? Orchestra on risers instead of the pit? Opera in the round? The final production of our 60th season was marked by an unconventional and groundbreaking rendition of Wagner’s Das Rheingold. This version stepped away from the conventional Wagnerian grandeur, embracing a daring, contemporary style featuring state of the art projections and avantgarde stagecraft.
Set in the intimate Maclab Theatre at Citadel, this performance was an auditory and visual spectacle, directed by Peter Hinton-Davis, a celebrated Canadian theatre and opera director. Patrons experienced a performance that not only revitalized the classic narrative but also challenged our expectations of what opera can be, ensuring a memorable journey with this timeless work. This arrangement made its Canadian premiere in a brand new production.
Performed with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
