Abbott & R.J Scott Schools at Les Contes d’Hoffmann

Edmonton Opera and ESSO Imperial invited elementary students from Abbott and R.J Scott Schools to attend the dress rehearsal performance of Les Contes d’Hoffmann Jan. 30, 2013, at the Jubilee Auditorium. Complimentary tickets and busses for the classes were provided for their students to attend live opera. For many, it was their first opera experience. Laurel Nikolai, music teacher at Abbott School, shared with us the impact of this field trip on her classes: “This experience touched my students in a way that was far beyond what I could have expected. For students that do not get experiences like this in their lives, they were delighted with the entire experience.”

it all stARTS with me

On June 24, 2012, City Lumber celebrated their 75th anniversary by inviting children from the Boys & Girls Clubs Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton to take part in a day filled with activities involving our city's arts organizations. The Art Gallery of Alberta, Citadel Theatre, Edmonton Opera and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra created workshops for the 120 children allowing them to experience the various art forms in exciting ways. Edmonton Opera took participants "backstage" to see behind the scenes the creation of opera involving costumes, singing and movement. Elaborate stage costumes were on hand for trying on and artists Robert Clark and Cathy Daniel engaged youth in vocal warm-ups, exercises and learning the chorus for a popular tune from Bizet's "Carmen." Thank you to City Lumber for your dedication to Edmonton's arts organizations and our community!

“My students were engaged throughout the entire visit from the Edmonton Opera team. The team who presented were entertaining, informative, and used their passion to inspire the young creative minds in the crowd. The students left with a sense of fascination at the world of professional music, as well as a better understanding of opera and of possible musical careers. Huge thanks go to Edmonton Opera for this wonderful educational outreach program.”
