encore field trip to visit Shakespeare … in the park!
July 14th, 2010 brianna
by the pricking of my thumbs… friday’s outing this way comes!
Encore’s taking a field trip this week to take in Macbeth, and all encore members are eligible for a discount on festival passes, so you can get yours for only $17.50 (regular single tickets are $22) and this gets you in to the show on Friday, and also a performance of Much Ado about Nothing, should you so desire!
To take advantage of this offer, please RSVP to encore@edmontonopera.com NO LATER than tomorrow by noon. Your tickets will be booked for you and available to pick up at the festival gates, and special rockstar seating will be reserved! We’ll also have a chance to meet the director of the festival, and in general have a great time. Please bring cash with you to pay for the tickets.
Gates open at 7:00 pm, and I suggest be there no later than 7:15 if you’d like a preshow drink — show starts at 8 pm.
Tickets can be picked up at the box office and we’ll meet by the beer gardens to find our way to our seats.
Post show drinks are located at the Jekyll and Hyde (downtown).

Old Spice guy on Opera
July 13th, 2010 colleenIn case you don’t follow the guy from the Old Spice Commercials on twitter, he has started making video clips to respond to different followers’ questions & comments. They are hilarious, much like his commercial where he is riding that horse.
Here is one video that hits close to home on the topic of Opera & Wagner:

Opera Al Fresco
June 15th, 2010 stellaThis Friday, June 18, Edmonton Opera will be hosting “Opera Al Fresco” at the Devonian Botanical Gardens from 7:00-10:00 p.m. This delightful garden party, which will include wine tastings and yummy hors d’oeuvres as well as fabulous singing, is a great way to celebrate the successes of the past season.
Of course, whenever wine, food and opera come together, you know that Encore! will be there in full force!
One of the perks of your Encore! membership is that you can attend Opera Al Fresco for only $35 (a $10 discount off the regular price).
And for those of you with little opera lovers-in-the-making, kids are also welcome for only $15.
If you would like to attend, please email us at encore@edmontonopera.com so that we can send you the secret Encore password for the ticket discount. Tickets can then be purchased directly from the Devonian Botanical Gardens directly at 780-987-3054 - don’t forget to give them your password!
Hope to see you on Friday!

Notes from Opera America
June 12th, 2010 briannaAfter 3 days in L.A. at the Opera America conference, I have some very cool things to bring back to encore!
#1 check out operaontap.com for a group that’s breaking down opera stereotypes by hosting concerts in local pubs
#2 visit operabyyou.com to learn more about and participate in the world’s first ever social opera, created through an online community! it will premiere in July 2012 in Finland…
#3 Turns out that Minnesota Opera is premiering a Wuthering Heights opera next year! AND they have a thriving club called TEMPO that might be interested in working together on some sort of cross-border field trip…. maybe a big jamboree in seattle in a year or two? Could be fun and I think warrants a survey of our members on what kind of opera/destination they’d be interested in pursuing for a long-weekend opera trip.
OK i have to get back to work now. there’s continental breakfast to be had, coffee to swill, and things to be learned. Huge shout out to LA Opera and Opera America for a fantastic conference!
-Brianna out.

May 25th, 2010 stellaThe encore! Encore! invited to Golf at the CGI classic!
May 22nd, 2010 briannaIn case anyone was wondering about the fringe benefits of encore! membership, here’s one:
Eleanor Olzewski and Katie Soles have both generously provided encore! members with the opportunity to golf in Edmonton Opera’s annual CGI classic. 8 spots were available and so far 5 have been filled. If you were an encore member in 2009/10 or have joined for 2010/11 and want to golf, email encore@edmontonopera.com to get one of those last 3 spots.
The CGI golf classic is in its 15th year, and will take place on June 10th at the Glendale Golf Course and Club. More info on the Edmonton Opera CGI Golf Classic here. All proceeds go to supporting Edmonton Opera, and we appreciate the generosity and support of our golfers and sponsors!
Good luck to the encore! golfers! we know you’ll represent well …

May 6th, 2010 colleenA couple of interesting articles came to my attention today, both on the topic of opera (of course!) but both also focus, in part, on the aging demographic of opera-goers. Let’s face it- we Encore members are definitely atypical. Rather than feeling bothered by this fact, I kind of like being different. But I also appreciate the fact that in order to thrive, opera needs to attract patrons of all ages. I think Encore is doing a great job thus far in helping us band together, and one of my favourite membership features is the group seating arrangement. In only our second year of operation, encore already has 23 members! It’s time to renew your subscription and encore dues, so make sure you do so, and keep our club growing.
Here are the articles I checked out today:
Vanity Fair article on the Met. Also some interesting details here on the Met operas (Turandot, Hoffman) that Encore saw this year.
By the way, the Encore executive is meeting today to review Storm the Stage and plan the direction of our group going into next season. We value your ideas and contributions, so please send them along. Looking forward to our 2010/11 season!

May 2nd, 2010 colleenWeren’t able to make it to April’s Storm the Stage, Encore’s legendary party held right on the set of Otello? Or you did, but now you want to see your fabulous costumes splashed across the internet? A few pictures have trickled in, and of course our blackmail-worthy group shot is up on the Encore! homepage. Here Brianna & Paul work tirelessly to set up STS!

Charlotte Burrowes (accompanied by Leanne Regehr) performs from the Otello balcony.
Lots of cast members attended… Here’s Roderigo (Thomas Macleay), who later rocked the air guitar with bonus points for style.
Thanks to Edmonton Opera for letting us play dressup. I really need a shot of Roman to post here.
The power couple at STS! All I can say is ro ma ro ma ma ga ga oh la la!
People said this was a good look on me. Perhaps they’d all had a little more to drink than I thought.
Hopefully more pictures to come!
A huge thanks to our sponsors Price Waterhouse Coopers and all the encore volunteers who made our second annual Storm the Stage party a big success. Thanks also to the cast members who attended, the performers and photographer, and of course to Edmonton Opera for making it all possible. What a night!!!
